How to Skip, Pause or Cancel Meal Delivery: Deadlines and Steps for Five Major Services

Skipping a week, pausing and cancelling are three different actions, and each service draws the line in a different place. Here are the steps and cutoffs for Factor, HelloFresh, Home Chef, CookUnity and Blue Apron, taken from their own help pages.

By Dana WhitcombePublished Updated

The short answer

Factor and HelloFresh cut off at 11:59 pm PST five days before delivery, Home Chef at noon Central on the Friday before delivery week, and Blue Apron by the Changeable Before date shown in your account. CookUnity's help pages warn that an order already processed or billed may still ship. In every case, cancelling stops future weeks but does not undo a box already locked in.

Most meal delivery subscriptions charge you automatically unless you act before a weekly deadline. That deadline, not the cancel button, is what decides whether you pay for another box. Below are the published rules for five major services, checked against their own help pages in September 2026. Cutoff times and menu screens change, so treat this as a map and confirm the date shown in your account before you rely on it.

Three actions, three meanings

  • Skip removes one delivery. Your subscription stays active and the next week proceeds as normal.
  • Pause stops deliveries for a set stretch, or indefinitely, depending on the brand.
  • Cancel ends the subscription. You can usually reactivate later, but a box that has already been processed is not undone by cancelling.

Blue Apron’s help center puts it plainly: skipping is not cancelling, and people who only skipped are charged again once the skipped weeks pass.

Factor

On the website you choose the delivery date, click Edit Delivery and select Skip Week. In the app you go to the week, tap the three dots beside the delivery date and choose Skip Week. Factor’s page gives the deadline as 11:59 pm PST, five days before your delivery.

To cancel on desktop, open Plan Settings, scroll to the Status section and click Deactivate My Plan, then choose an option or Cancel Anyway, give a reason and confirm with Deactivate Now. The page says deactivating pauses your deliveries indefinitely, and that you can reactivate when you are ready. On iOS the route is through the menu, Settings, Personal Information and Delete Account. Note that Factor’s wording for cancellation is “deactivate”, so look for that instead of a button labelled cancel. Our Factor review has the rest of the service.

HelloFresh

To skip, log in, open My Menu, select the delivery day and click Skip Week. To cancel, click your name at the upper right, choose Account Settings, scroll to the Status section on the plan settings page and click Cancel Plan, then follow the prompts. The company states its cutoff this way: pause or cancel by 11:59 pm PST five days before your next scheduled delivery so it can alert suppliers, and it cannot process cancellations requested after that; you remain responsible for charges on orders already processed. See the HelloFresh review.

Home Chef

Home Chef’s skip route is Your Upcoming Orders, then Manage Delivery on the week in question, then Skip This Week’s Delivery. You can also click Edit Meals and use Skip this delivery at the bottom of the menu. It sends a confirmation email for each skip. Skips and menu edits must be made by 12 PM CST on the Friday before the delivery week.

Cancelling is where people get caught. The help center says pausing is an effective cancellation: the option labelled Pause My Account, found under Account Settings on the website or under My Settings in the app, will cancel your subscription, and you can log back in to reactivate. Cancel before Friday at 12 PM CST the week before your next delivery, and do not stop until you reach the confirmation screen and get the email. Cancelling does not cancel a first order or any order already processed. Details are in the Home Chef review.

CookUnity

To skip, click the delivery day on your Home Page and choose Skip Order, confirm, and look for the email. You can also skip from the Orders Hub via the three dots beside the date. To pause, open Account, then Preferences, then My Plan, and pick a break of 2 to 8 weeks. To cancel, go to Account, Settings, and Cancel Subscription, pick a reason, tick the confirmation box and confirm.

CookUnity’s help pages carry a warning worth reading twice: pausing or cancelling stops future weeks, but it may not stop an order that has already been processed or billed. It also notes that available credits may be deleted when you cancel, so use them or check first. We could not find a fixed cutoff day and time on these pages, so use the date your account shows. See the CookUnity review.

Blue Apron

Go to your Upcoming page, find the delivery, choose Manage Delivery, then Skip This Delivery and confirm. A red x appears beside the date. The pause screen offers 4, 6, 8 or 10 weeks, and there is a link at the bottom to cancel; a short survey follows. All changes have to be made by the Changeable Before date shown on your Upcoming page and Account Settings. There is more in the Blue Apron review.

Mistakes that cost people a box

  • Confusing skip and cancel. A skipped week leaves the subscription running, so deliveries resume unless you also cancel.
  • Missing the time zone. Factor and HelloFresh state their cutoff in Pacific time, and Home Chef states its in Central time. If you live on the East Coast, an 11:59 pm PST deadline arrives at 2:59 am Eastern the next morning, which is easy to misjudge.
  • Stopping before the confirmation. Home Chef says a cancellation is not complete until you see the confirmation screen and receive an email.
  • Assuming a credit survives. CookUnity says available credits may be deleted when you cancel.
  • Forgetting the first box. Home Chef notes that cancelling does not cancel a first order that has already been processed.

A safe routine

  1. Put a calendar reminder for the day before the earliest cutoff among your services.
  2. After any change, wait for the confirmation email; that email is your proof.
  3. If you plan a long trip, pause or cancel instead of stacking skips.
  4. If a box you did not want ships anyway, contact support quickly; do not assume a refund.

Questions people ask

How do I skip a week of HelloFresh?
Log in, open My Menu, select the delivery day you want to skip and choose Skip Week. HelloFresh says to pause or cancel by 11:59 pm PST five days before your next scheduled delivery, and that it cannot process requests after the cutoff.
What is the deadline to cancel Home Chef?
Home Chef asks you to cancel before Friday at 12 PM CST the week preceding your next delivery. It says it cannot cancel orders that are finalized, processed or shipped, and that cancelling does not cancel a first order that is already processed.
Does pausing a meal service cancel it?
It depends on the brand. Home Chef's help center says its Pause My Account option is effectively a cancellation you can reactivate. Factor says deactivating pauses deliveries indefinitely. CookUnity and Blue Apron offer timed pauses of weeks; check which button you press.
Will I still get a box after I cancel?
Possibly. CookUnity says cancelling stops future weeks but does not automatically cancel orders that were already processed or billed, and Home Chef says the same for orders already processed. Cancel before your provider's cutoff to avoid one last delivery.
Is skipping a week the same as cancelling?
No. A skip leaves your subscription active and deliveries resume after the skipped week. Blue Apron's help center makes the point directly, so if you want deliveries to stop for good, use the cancel option, not skip.
Can I get my account back after cancelling?
Generally yes. Factor says you can reactivate when ready, Home Chef prompts you to reactivate when you log back in, and CookUnity says the same Settings page can be used to reactivate later. Check your remaining credits first, since CookUnity may delete them on cancellation.
